PERSONAL STATEMENT

 PERSONAL STATEMENT

My name is Tobiloba Ayomide Adebayo, I was born in the capital city Abuja, Nigeria, in 1998. I completed my undergraduate degree in Bachelor science Pharmacy in the year 2017 from Central University Ghana. I am currently undergoing a masters foundation program with Oncampus North at the University of Central Lancashire. The foundation program is a two-term program which starts in January 2023 and ends in June 2023, after which I would be progressing to UCLan to study Masters in Cancer Biology and therapy.

The reason for my choice of course is due to the fact that growing up I had always been empathetic and interested in lending a helping hand to everyone around me and over the years I have discovered that I easily motivate those around and they likewise find it easier opening up to me, although with my background in pharmacy I sometimes find it limiting when it comes to offering professional help as bulk of the work involves dispensing medications and less of patient interaction.

That is why I chose a career path in community work by working with a non-governmental organization. even as a student I was actively involved in community outreaches which involved going to remote villages and orphanages where we offered medical interventions and also interact with the villages.

To delve into the course choice further, according to cancer research UK, in 2019 death associated with cancer was approximately 167,000 yearly and in Nigeria 72,000 deaths and worldwide cancer deaths were assumed to be approximately 10 million as at 2020, I have some personal experience with cancer patients, and I saw firsthand how it affected them and those around them. Recently, I had a supervisor from my internship program who was diagnosed with cancer, and she has undergone chemotherapy but the effect it has had on her family and friends cannot be explained, these are few reasons why I want to study this course, to have Indepth knowledge. The genesis of cancer cells, the various stages of cancer, chemotherapy and its effect and the chance of remission, the psychological effect it has on the patient, their family and friends and how to help them with the mental effect it has.

Asides from my educational interests, I always have interest in writing as I used to write short stories and articles for a school mate's blog, and I was involved in health talks for the school's radio. I love travelling cause growing up, I travelled to a lot of places for vacations with my family and I still take out time from work's busy schedule to travel round to enjoy the scenery and I also hope to visit different places in the United Kingdom and around Europe.

INDEPENDENT LEARNING ESSAY

 INDEPENDENT LEARNING ESSAY

According to Charles A. Wedmeyer, "independent learning can be defined as learning carried on wholly or largely independently of outside direction or control, characterized by learner autonomy and distance of educational authority". whereby sources for learning are communicated to study via telephone, email and it involves a two-way communication between the teacher and the student with individual tailored instructions.

According to the University of Sheffield, there certain skills that help students with their independent study and these includes:

1.understanding oneself by studying how best you can carry out educational task alone.

2.Being organized.

3.Building self-confidence.

4. stay motivated.

5. setting SMART goals.

6 working together with course mates, that is developing team spirit.

The benefit of independent study as researched by the Department of children, schools and family, shows that student show improvement in their educational performances, increase in their motivation and confidence, increase in students' awareness of limitations and ability to manage it, enables teachers carry individualized tasks for students and help with social inclusion by preventing alienation.

the purpose of this essay is to identify the importance of independent learning by comparing the British and the Nigerian educational system, using my personal experience.

Looking at the differences in cultural lives of both countries, it is expected that there would be differences also in the educational systems. The Nigerian educational systems makes the lecturer the dictator, with what is termed as a "chew and pour" system, this means cramming what the lecturer has given and pouring back word for word to the lecturer during examinations, but in my undergraduate studies in Ghana, it was a bit different as even though you would have to cram and pour back for some lecturers there was still a bit of independent study that was in place. In the United Kingdom, there is a huge difference in the education system, with tutors letting students build on their individual ideas and skills. ensuring students understand their weaknesses and build on their skills. I have been able to build on my communication skill, whereby I get confident to answer questions in class and interact in class, tutors lay emphasis on independent study and the use of library. So far with the British education, I have been encouraged more to use my own words with systems put in place to avoid and detect plagiarism, but this is not the case in Nigeria as a system of cramming is encouraged and students that do not do as expected then to be scored lower. also, in the United Kingdom you get scored for what you deserve but with lecturers deemed to be gods in the educational system in Nigeria, you get scored how the lecturer deems fit.

I plan to continue to use various methods of independent learning in my master's foundation pathway and further to my master's degree and like the University of Sheffield also encouraged teamwork, in cases where the tasks seem difficult together with the help of the tutor and suggestions from putting heads together with my course mates or group members solve such problems.

In conclusion, I have been able to highlight what independent study is, tips to independent study and the benefits and I have been able to use my personal experience to buttress my point. The Educational system in the United Kingdom encourages one to use their creative and critical thinking which is essential in the development of any society.

SMART TARGET

                                                         SMART TARGETS

These are goals that are realistic and have a time range, according to the BBC Bitesize smart goals " can make goals seem and to be achievable". we all have personal goals and targets we would like to meet up but are these goals "SMART". growing up I knew when I wanted to achieve and when I wanted to achieve and the older, I get the more goals I have with shorter timelines. my goal for this course or foundation program involves.

                                                                SPECIFIC:

For a goal to the specific one needs to state exactly what needs to be done and for me this is to round up the foundation program successfully by finishing all course works and assignments within the given timeline.

MEASURABLE:

The success should be clear and what it should look like to be able measure these goals, each assigned would have been submitted on Turnitin and accessed by the Tutor and scores or feedbacks given.

ACHIEVABLE:

for a goal achievable it needs to be attainable and not unrealistic and for my set goals all resources to achieve the goal has been provided, with each tutor giving assignment briefs and of the library or online articles to complete each task.

REALISTIC:

Is the goal achievable, is it practical and the steps needed to carry it out, personally this goal is important as it is a primary step to progression into the Maters program which has an impact on my professional growth.

TIMELY:

the timeline the goals should be stated, and timelines should be met. All of these goals are divided into two submissions before the end of April and also before the end of June.

SWOT ANALYSIS

 STRENGTH, WEAKNESS, OPPORTUNITIES, THREATS ANALYSIS

According to CIPD, SWOT analysis is a tool which seeks to identify the strength, weakness, threats and opportunities in a project or organization. each individual has different personalities which includes what we would consider as our strengths or weaknesses and sometimes looking around we find opportunities and threats around us, personally I would like to think that the following describes my SWOT analysis.

STRENGTHS

1. I have the ability to adapt to any environment or situation I find myself, I try my possible best to prevent my personal circumstances from affecting my environment or the activities I have to carry out.

2. I have over time developed the ability of staying levelheaded or calm during a difficult situation and this has helped me in being logical and not rash or influenced by emotions when something unpleasant happens. Growing up I used to cry when I get poor scores in a test, but I was thought that the result of the test doesn't speak about your intelligence, but the efforts made afterwards to improve on future tests is what matters.

3. multitasking has somewhat been a natural skill as I grew up the first girl child, this has developed to be a skill that has become helpful over the years with planning and combining education and career and also childcare.

4.I have the ability to think outside the box, which is a good problem-solving skill, and this can be seen as I was one of the best students in mathematics in my high school.

5. Another strength which I have is that I am a visual learner and I learn with organizing the notes or pictures or graphs, according to Neil Fleming's VAK/VARK learning model, a visual learner has the preference for using visual aids whiles learning rather than words and they are set to use a lot of color-coding whiles learning or taking more detailed notes in class.

WEAKNESS

1. As English is not my first language, I have shortcomings when speaking as I am not as fluent as I would love to be and although my English test score band would state otherwise, I am still of the belief that I need improvement in my English speaking.

2. I am a person of little words; I can be quite friendly, but I also have the tendency not to speak a lot and this in a long way affects my ability to express ad distorts my coherence.

3.As expected from a person with little words, I am also timid, I have put in efforts to work on it as it also affects my way of expression and reduces how I am able to sell myself during interviews or presentation, but this is also a work in progress.

OPPORTUNITIES

1. with my professional background as a pharmacist, this is a good opportunity as it has helped me understand different aspect of computer literacy as I have had to submit reports and make presentations.

2. Another opportunity is me obtaining a master's degree and I am currently doing the foundation program; this would lead to an opportunity to learn new skills and improve on my shortcomings.

3. With the United Kingdom being a developed country, the style of teaching is quite different to the one I am used to, and it provides an environment for growth whereby with the level of technology and exposure students are allowed to express themselves and this gives room for corrections.

THREATS

1. with my cultural background there are certain times my mother tongue gets in the way of my English speaking with issues such as pronouncing words that begin with the letter's "H, O, A, E".

2. There are situations where my personal situation would get in the way, as a single mother in a new country, there are sometimes challenges with finding childcare as my kid is also adapting to a new environment and this can lead to crankiness and distractions with the nanny calling and also changing of nanny.

Current course of study: master's Foundation program pathways towards Masters in Cancer Biology and Therapy at UClan

Previous Employers: I graduated from Pharmacy in the June 2017 and since then I have been involved in various aspect of the Pharmacy profession, I started my internship at the National Assembly Clinic Abuja in January 2018 and ended January 2019 after which I went on to do a mandatory national service with University of Uyo teaching hospital for another year and immediately after the service year, I was fortunate enough to get employment at a nongovernmental organization, that catered to the needs of persons living with HIV/AIDS and therefore I was able to improve my knowledge on HIV and the services that are delivered to a patient, unfortunately, I had to leave the job cause even though I was able to help people I was not comfortable with the staff treatment and compared to other colleagues in the same work space we did not have concrete staff benefits. I started volunteering as a supply chain and logistics officer and in February 2021 I secured another job with another under the same organization but with better benefits and after which the project ended, I transitioned to a new organization in August 2022, and I left in January for the postgraduate studies.

Hobbies: I love travelling as I used to have a lot of family trips growing and unfortunately, I left for my undergraduate studies when I was 15 years, and I could not always travel with the family as I was usually in my country of study, but I always ensured I travelled round during the holidays as I enjoyed the beaches around and the recreational parks. I hope to travel around the UK during the Holidays with my son.

Another of my hobby is watching movies, I learn from movies a lot of different languages, so I do not restrict myself to just English-speaking movies, as the little phrases learnt from those movies come in handy when I meet people from those regions.

I also love writing but lately I have been slacking off hopefully I get to start with renewed energy.

lastly, another hobby is trying new cuisine and the United Kingdom is a country with diverse cultures, so I hope to experience each culture from their delicacies.
